The Furniture Design
Excellence Award
Inaugural Edition · Open for Submissions
Honouring designers and makers who create furniture of enduring quality — through material intelligence, structural integrity, and the conviction that an object can carry meaning across generations.
For Those Who Shape How People Live
Furniture design sits at the intersection of sculpture and utility. A well-made piece shapes posture, anchors a room, rewards touch, and carries meaning across decades. It is one of the most intimate disciplines in design: objects that people live with, move around, and eventually pass on.
The Furniture Design Excellence Award by Design Authority recognises designers, makers, and studios who approach their craft with this conviction. Whether your work is a limited-edition commission, a production piece, or a bespoke object made for one, we are looking for the quality of thought that elevates furniture from product to legacy.
This is not an award for the most prominent name. It is an award for the most compelling work — submitted, evaluated, and ultimately chosen by a public that cares deeply about the spaces it calls home.
What Recognition
at This Level Unlocks
Winning a Design Authority Award carries weight that extends well beyond a certificate on a wall.
Reach Collectors and Commissioning Clients
The DA Awards audience includes collectors, interior designers, and homeowners actively seeking exceptional furniture makers. Your recognition puts your work directly in front of the people who commission and buy.
Portfolio Validation
A DA Awards badge tells the story before the brief does. Editorially evaluated and publicly recognised — proof that your work is both technically accomplished and genuinely desired.
Open to Every Maker
Solo makers, small studios, and established manufacturers compete on equal terms. No minimum turnover, no invitation required — just the work.
New Stockist & Studio Opportunities
Our Winners Directory is browsed by interior designers, developers, and hospitality buyers seeking furniture commissions — with your award credentials prominently displayed.
Permanent Editorial Profile
Each winner receives a professionally written piece on Design Authority — documenting the piece, the material choices, the process, and the maker behind it.
Digital Emblem
A high-resolution DA Awards emblem for your website, lookbook, trade presentations, and social channels — a mark that signals serious craft.
How Entries Are Judged
Every entry is scored by our editorial team against five criteria — Form, Function, Craft, Innovation, Emotion — contributing 70% of the final score. Public appreciation adds the remaining 30% — this is an award that rewards holistic excellence, not a single dimension of skill.
Form & Proportion
Does the piece demonstrate a strong, resolved aesthetic? We look for work where every dimension and curve has been considered — nothing arbitrary, nothing borrowed.
Material Intelligence
How does the piece use its material? We assess the relationship between the chosen material and the structural, tactile, and aesthetic demands of the object.
Structural Integrity
Does the piece do what it is meant to do, at the level it is meant to do it? We look for construction that is honest, considered, and built to last.
Craft & Finish
The difference between a good piece and a great one is found at the joints, the edges, and the surfaces. We look for evidence of genuine making skill.
Originality
Has the designer introduced something genuinely new — in typology, material, form, or method? We value work that advances the conversation, not just joins it.
Longevity
Will this piece still be worth owning in twenty years? We ask whether the work transcends the moment it was made in, in both physical and cultural terms.
